Qatar Debate League

In October 2008, the second annual Qatar Debate League will launch. The league will run from October until May.

Every school and university in Qatar has been able to register up to 3 teams, each containing 3 debaters.

QatarDebate, a member of Qatar Foundation, is a civic engagement initiative which aims to develop and support the standard of open discussion and debate among students and young people in Qatar and the broader Arab World. Our mission is to foster a culture of discussion and debate, and in doing so, create the leaders of tomorrow.

Since our founding in 2007, over 2500 students have participated in QatarDebate’s annual programme of workshops, and we now have a presence in over 30 schools and universities in Qatar. QatarDebate runs intensive workshops for students, an annual debate league and national competitions, selects the Qatar National Schools’ Debating Team, and produces media resources for use in schools and universities across the Arab World.

QatarDebate currently works with students in secondary schools (12+) and universities in Qatar, and in 2009 will also begin incorporating preparatory school students into our programmes. Going forward, in February 2010 Qatar will host the World Schools’ Debating Championships in the Arab World for the first time, we are in the process of launching an Arabic language debate programme, and we look forward to working with our partner organizations to deliver innovative and interactive curriculum materials to educational institutions around the world. To do all of this we look forward to working with you, the leaders of tomorrow.

QatarDebate 'Introduction to Debating' DVD set released

QatarDebate is pleased to announce the release of our first interactive educational tool, 'An Introduction to Debating', a 5-disc DVD training set for students, teachers and parents.

As part of QatarDebate's mission to develop, support and raise the standard of open discussion and debate in Qatar and across the world, we are delighted to offer educational institutions (schools, universities, not-for-profits and national debating federations) anywhere in the world up to 3 copies of the DVD set completely free of charge.

The DVD set will also be available through online retail stores.

QatarDebate September 2008 Mini-Competition

Come along to the LAS Building at Education City for a QatarDebate One Day Mini-Competition. QatarDebate Coaches will organise a series of practice debates for both School and University debaters.

You must have attended AT LEAST ONE QatarDebate Workshop to attend the One Day Mini-Competition.

WSDC: World Record Performance in Washington DC

Between September 5th and September 15th the first Qatar National Schools Debating Team competed at the World Schools Debating Championships in Washington D.C.

For the last 20 years WSDC has been the highest level of debating competition at high school. This year's competition involved 39 countries from around the world.

Team Qatar finished 19th, ahead of established debating nations including Germany, Japan and the USA. Their 4 wins in the preliminary stages of the competition was a new record for a team making its debut.

Qatar 2010 WSDC Bid Booklet released

In preparation for QatarDebate's bid at WSDC Washington DC in September to host the World Schools' Debating Championships in Doha in 2010, we have released a promotional bid booklet which we hope will answer your questions about Qatar, QatarDebate and our bid to host World Schools. This bid booklet and supplementary technical information about the bid will be presented to the WSDC Council in Washington DC.

We will also be releasing a promotional video in the run-up to WSDC Washington to give you more information about Qatar and debating in Qatar.

Qatar to bid to host the 2010 World Schools' Debating Championships
