Hi there!
I'm very pleased to announce that Newcastle is now officially bidding for 2009 Euros. The bid is formally known as "EUDC Newcastle'09 @NewcastleGateshead" but Newcastle'09 will do in normal parlance :-)Our website/email is to follow shortly, but for now if you want any questions answered please do contact me, Russell Haswell.

We've attracted a strong team so far Oskar Avery and I are the Co-Convenors. Our CA is Sam Block, ably assisted by Alex Ward, Leela Koenig and James Dray.

We've so far very kindly received the support of many organisations which include:

NewcastleGateshead Partnership (including Newcastle City Council & Gateshead Metropolitan Borough)
Newcastle University
Newcastle Union Society
Newcastle University Debating Society

Proposed dates are July 31st-August 7th.
Our final venue (for *both* Main and ESL) is The Sage Gateshead, Europe's newest and finest opera house and acoustically the best venue in Europe (I'm told).

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more announcements coming soon about the details of the bid, and how you can get involved.

Yours,
Russell A. Haswell

It is aga in interesting, that the EUDC bid from Newcastle is again going to be in the summer. As far as I'm informed, the normal dates for the EUDC were as the last Berlin, march. But since Istanbul (where it was a bit more understandable), we are having it in the summer. All the problems with the exams, higher airplane tickets etc. are ere just because of... ?

Hi there,

The choice of a summer date is that
a) despite the perceived problems, it did not damage istanbul at all, in fact, attendance was up.

b) the earlier dates are deeply unfair to a lot of students from central and eastern europe that have exams then, the summer option at istanbul was in retrospect quite popular with the most geographical areas.

c) it's far far far easier to organise stuff for the summer

Hey...
I can agree with c), but can not agree with you on b). Comming from an central/eeastern Europe country, I know that a lot of debaters can not attend this years EUDC, just because of the exams, and march was an ok date for it.
I can agree with a) and add, the weather is just best

Enjoy
